Preparing For Tomorrow : Innovation, Education Reform
BJP MP Varun Gandhi addressed students at DY Patil University in Nerul, stressing upon the need to “boost the culture of innovation”. Gandhi also advised investors who put their money into start-ups to have patience. “Start-ups in America, Germany, England and Singaore have a gestation period of about 10 years. People who are investing in start-ups in India want to make money from day one, which is frankly unreasonable and impossible.”
The MP from Sultanpur has donated his salary to the poor for the last nine years, not taking a single rupee. “I suggested to MPs and MLAs that they should give up their monthly salary like I had done. But my suggestion has was ignored by all,” he said.
Gandhi said, research and development is key to India’s progress. “As per statistics, in India we have 316 research and development personnel per million people. In Germany this year that number is 8,000 R&D personnel per million,” he added. India spends 0.6% of its GDP on R&D while countries like South Korea and Israel spend almost 5%. Even Sri Lanka spends 2.5%, he said. “We have start-ups in India but a lot of them are copies. We are not innovating, while we are creating,” he added.
