Cine artist Mr Yateen Karyekar visits DYPU-SBB for Gender Sensitization

Internal Complaints Committee organized gender sensitization with well-known cine artist Mr Yateen Karyekar 

The Internal Complaints Committee of the School of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, D Y Patil Deemed to be University, Navi Mumbai, organized a gender sensitization event for students of the school on the 22nd February 2018.


The event consisted of a Street play and flash mob. Renowned Cine actor Mr Yateen Karyekar was present as the chief guest of the event. The event management was done by the Gender Champions of the school in close coordination with the ICC members.


The Street Play was organized by the School’s drama club “Jaivarangayatan”. The play highlighted on issues those are considered as sexual harassment and are cognizable and punishable offences as per Indian Penal Code. They performed brilliantly and very convincingly highlighted the existing societal discrepancy with respect to gender.

The flash mob was performed by the Dance club “Transposons”. This was a contemporary dance performance based on the theme of gender equality and sexual harassment. The dance was choreographed on a medley of songs with narration by Amitabh Bachchan as connectors.


The Director Prof Debjani Dasgupta welcomed the Chief Guest. She spoke about the importance of ICC in academic organizations and congratulated the students for taking up such an initiative.

The Chief Guest Mr Yateen Karyekar also encouraged the students’ initiative and emphasized the importance of the role played by media especially the field of Cinema and Dramatics in creating awareness.


The Gender Champion (Ms Pavithra Kumar) opened the event formally with an introduction to ICC. In her dialogue with the students, she conveyed relevant information about UGC guidelines related to Internal Complaints Committee and gender sensitization.

The Gender Champion (Mr Suman Mishra) closed the event with the proposal of a vote of thanks during which he reiterated the role of Gender Champions and appealed to the students to be rightfully aware of their responsibilities with respect to Gender equality and Sexual harassment in academic organizations.

Interaction of Mr Yateen Karyekar with the Students:

There was a separate interactive session held on the 1st floor in one of the classrooms (1C) following the Gender sensitization program. The Chief Guest Mr Yateen Karyekar closely interacted with Jaivarangayatan members. Several teachers and other students also attended this interaction.  In an hour-long assembly, Mr Karyekar addressed several questions of the budding performers and gave a vivid insight into the glamorous world of Cinema. At times with live performances, Mr Karyekar enthralled the students as he described his journey through film Industry.
