Guestroom Designing for Differently Abled Guests

DY Patil Deemed to be University, School of Hospitality &Tourism Studies organized an exclusive webinar on Guestroom Designing for Differently Abled Guests on 1st September 2020. This webinar was attended by third year students of B.Sc Hospitality. The webinarwas conducted by internationally certified interior designer MsBeena Ramaiya. Principal Interior Designer Consultant owns firm Art N Interior, Mumbai.

MsBeena Ramaiya before starting the session she addressed the students stating that empathy is required not sympathy for the differently abled people. Right frame of mind and attitude are required by the service providers so we can give proper and efficient services. She told the correct parliamentary words for differently abled persons. The verbiage like blind, deaf, handicapped and so on are not appropriate way to address the differently abled people. She explained who are differently abled people and what are the care has to take while designing the room or public areas for them.

The guest showed the layout of the both regular and special rooms to the students. And then explained how they are different and why it is different. The guest explained the furniture arrangement and sizes of the furniture. The sizes of the furniture is different from regular furniture specially height is lower. For safety and security of the guest what are the equipment used. She explained focus is more on comfort of the guest rather on design.

The guest also explained the designing of the guestroom’s bathroom. Again like room this is also bigger in size. Proper rallying fitted so it makes the movement of the guest from the wheel chair to the to the sanitary wares like WC and shower area is easy. The night of the vanity unit is lower and the doors of the bathroom is always outwards are the some necessary information shared to students. The rooms and bathrooms have sensory buttons for emergency call to hotel. So they can be urgently attended in case of emergency.

To make hotel a friendly for differently abled guest starts from the entrance of the hotel. Parking space allotted specially for these guests to ramp in all the public areas make the guest stay comfortable and memorable. Guest said apart from hotel infrastructure main is attitude of the staff towards the differently abled guest should be empathy not sympathy. This statement has been emphasized by the guest in the beginning of the session and the end also.

The webinar was organized by Asst. Prof. Rekha Ramu from the Housekeeping Department of the college  took up the initiative of bridging the gap between the industry and the academia by bringing stalwarts of the profession into the college. The honorary speaker for the event was MsBeena Ramaiya, Principal Interior Designer Consultant, shared her  vast industry experience and finesse with the assembled audience who were completely intrigued by her acumen and verbal skills. Each and every participant thoroughly enjoyed the session, asked a lot of questions to the guest and was satisfied by the answers they received in return. The participants benefitted immensely from witnessing such a knowledge gaining interaction and learnt a lot about elements of interior designing of hotels
