Housekeeping Ascending above Genders

DY Patil Deemed to be University, School of Hospitality &Tourism Studies organized an exclusive webinar on Housekeeping: Ascending above Genders on 10th August 2020. This webinar was attended by second and third year students of B.Sc Hospitality. The webinar was conducted by renowned author Mr G Raghubalan also hospitality consultant and by Mr Harpreet Vohra, Cluster GM – Radisson Blu.

The webinar started with brief introduction of both the guests. Mr Raghubalan commenced the session with topic -“Myth- Housekeeping is career for women”. Guest said it has been learnt students generally have the mind frame housekeeping is all about cleaning and keeping the hotel hygienic. He said because of this we don’t get the efficient employees for the housekeeping because of this myth. Its good see the colleges are creating awareness about it by conducting webinar on such topics. Guest told the housekeeping has tremendous career options comparatively to other departments. One can make career in hotel, cruises, airport, facility management companies and can set up their own business. With entrepreneurship housekeeping has many options like facility management company, carpet shampooing, façade cleaning, waste management and many more. Mr. Harpreet Vohra added while recruiting anyone in housekeeping, hotels never had gender bias attitude. He said the qualities which is essential for the housekeeper and the right attitude of the candidate are most important. A person with right attitude is the one who are willing to learn and work in the department. He said in most of the hotels he has seen female chefs and male housekeeper making their marker in their respective field

Mr. Raghubalan said it is very important to learn all the subjects to excel in hotel career. Especially when one is planning career in housekeeping, the students should not only focus on housekeeping subject but also study front office with equal interest and dedication. As both the subjects are very important as they are interlinked and work as room division department of the hotel. They should also learn accountancy as and when they grow to management level it is very much required to understand the figures provided by the account department. To this Mr. Vohra said as a GM of a hotel, these facts and figures helps him to take the decision for the hotel. He added at the end of the day it is the profit which every hotel aims for and that is the one of the main job of the general manager . For the interview both suggested with technical knowledge a right attitude is most important. Both gave various tips on interview skills and also for the improving the communication skills.

The webinar was organized by Asst. Prof. Rekha Ramu from the Housekeeping Department of the college took up the initiative of bridging the gap between the industry and the academia by bringing stalwarts of the profession into the college. The honorary speakers for the event Mr Raghubalan and Mr Harpreet Vohra, shared their vast industry experience and finesse with the assembled audience who were completely intrigued by her acumen and verbal skills. Each and every participant thoroughly enjoyed the session, asked a lot of questions to the guest and was satisfied by the answers they received in return. The participants benefitted immensely from witnessing such a knowledge gaining interaction and learnt a lot about housekeeping and their growth in housekeeping.
