Welcome 2015.At D Y Patil SHTS, we started the New Year with a series of workshops being conducted by experts from the Hotel Industry on Campus for the students. This was a good window for students to interact with Industry personnel and learn through practical demonstrations and guest lectures about specialized topics.
We started with a workshop conducted by Rakesh Saini from 32degree Chocolate Studio about Sugar Art.32 degree studio is a brain child of sugar artist and chocolatier Mr. Rakesh Saini. Rakesh has been in food industry since 2003 in UK. He is a certified professional chocolatier from Ecole School of Chocolat (California, USA). Picked up sugar art in London and thereafter has developed many skills through self learning. He has lived and worked in UK for a span of 10 years. Rakesh has authored ‘Magical Christmas Cupcakes’, a book presenting creative sugar craft designs.
This was followed by Fruit Carving Workshop by Master Carver Feroz Khan.
Feroz Khan is a great carver and having exceptional talent in carving. He has proven his talent through his many outstanding carving design and workshops.
Feroz Khan is a carver who created many designs using fruit and vegetable, soap and ice. It was during his job at Taj Hotel, Mumbai he met the traditional art of carving fruit and vegetables. Then he has concentrated more on his work, carving on all types of fruits and vegetables. He hence pursued a three year full time degree course at Mumbai, Rizvi Hotel Management College.He went on an become a top student of his class.
We had Ghanshyamdas Verma, the Executive Housekeeper of Ramada Navi Mumbai visit our Campus to teach Towel Origami to our students. Students had a great time learning to develop best of animal shapes by using various towels. It was fun to see Monkeys, Elephants, Swans, etc being created out of Towels.
A workshop on Bar Tending Skills was conducted by Bar Tender Kamlesh from Machhiato. MACCHIATO is concept by Alberto Canepari (Director & Founder of GC&P Italy), Manoj Rai (Celebrity Chef), and Alok Tiwari (CEO & MD of GC&P India). Their idea is to bring Authentic Italian culture and food with warmth of delicate Italian Standard Hospitality Services. It was great to see Cocktails being shaken, Mocktails being stirred and Bottles being juggled by the expert.
With a whiff of wine in the air a Workshop was conducted by Sommelier Sovna Puri from Sula Wines. Sovna’s first steps into the wine industry began with an internship in France in a Michelin starred, Relais & Chateaux property. It was there that she met a sommelier for the first time, and was initiated into the importance of one at a restaurant. She then moved to London and worked with Benares, an Indian Michelin starred restaurant as the Asst. Head Sommelier for over two years while pursuing the advanced course in wine education from the WSET (Wine & Spirits Education Trust), London. After joining Sula, she realized the scope and need of wine education in India and went back to complete her ‘Teachers Training’ from WSET, London. Ever since then she has been actively involved in tastings and trainings across India.
This was followed by a workshop conducted by Chef Noah,Chef Shrinivas & Mr.Raheja from Rich’s Cream. Founded by Robert Rich Sr. in 1945, Rich Products Corporation was born from an innovation – the world’s first non-dairy whipped topping. The founder of the non-dairy segment of the frozen-food industry, Rich’s is a leading supplier and solutions provider to the foodservice, in-store bakery and retail marketplaces. The company is the world leader in non-dairy toppings, icings and other emulsions.
With a view to help students develop their CV Writing Skills a special workshop was conducted by Ms.Deepa from Rosetta Stones. Rosetta Stones is an enterprise which is involved in Personality Development, Communication Skills, Business Etiquettes, etc.
We also had held an English Seminar conducted by Mr.Ameet Pokharnikar.Ameet is a Training Manager at Mercator.Ameet spoke about how to conduct oneself during an Interview,how to prepare a Resume and technicalities of Group Discussion.
One of our guest lecturers was conducted by Dr.K Thiru from Singapore. He has worked in the Tourism, Hospitality, Financial and Education industries. Dr Thiru is a world class inspirational speaker with many original and interesting ideas as a master in the tourism and hospitality industry. Attending one of his lectures may change the view on the world, life, and the way of captivating audiences.
Joshua Tate joined Chivas Brothers as a Brand Ambassador for Ballantine’s Whisky, the world’s second largest scotch, based in the south of India. His role is very varied, focusing on growing Ballantine’s in this emerging market, through organizing and hosting tastings and events.Joshua Tate was on our Campus to discuss history of Ballantine, Scotch Distillation Process & Rules for making history n Scotland,Whiskey based cocktails.
Cocktails & Dreams, Mumbai, trains people interested in the field of Bar Tending to become Professional Bartenders in Commercial Bars.
Ruturaj Bhosale & Mukesh Khatri from Cocktails & Dreams conducted workshop on Molecular Mixology,Importance of Molecular Cocktails & Latest Bar Trends at our Campus.It was a unique concept for the students.
Mr.Amit Nambiar, Sr. Manager Thomas Cook- COL Mumbai conducted a seminar on the opportunities in Travel and Tourism Industry for the students. The session consisted of How Travel industry is contributing towards economy?, About Thomas Cook, Different business verticals in Travel management company like Thomas Cook for job opportunities, Different job opportunities in Travel and Tourism, What are the quality of personality needed to work in Travel & Tourism industry, About Centre of learning initiative from Thomas Cook and different training programs provided by ‘Centre of learning’ for the graduates and under graduates.
All these Workshops have provided students hands on knowledge from experts from the industry and a glimpse of various aspects of the Hospitality Industry.
