First workshop on “Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP)”

The Medical Education Unit of Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Navi-Mumbai conducted the first 3 days MCI recognized workshop on “Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP)” under the governance of the Nodal/ Regional centre -Seth. G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, from 12th-14th June 2019.

Dr. Sharmila Jalgaonkar, AssociateProfessor, Pharmacology, Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, Parel, Mumbai was appointed as the MCI observer for this workshop.

Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Navi-Mumbai is grateful to Medical Council of India for granting permission to conduct these workshops under the aegis of Nodal Centre, GSMC-KEM Hospital, Mumbai. Continuous guidance and inputs regarding the conduct of the workshop and knowledge resources were provided by GSMC KEMH, Mumbai, for the workshop. We are extremely indebted to the entire MEU faculty from GSMC KEMH for helping us to conduct the workshop effectively.

The Curriculum Committee Members who had successfully completed the CISP workshop at the Nodal Centre were included as resource faculty for the workshop. A MEU meeting was called and the faculties were explained the outlines and objectives of the workshop. The List of topics and related resource material were distributed to the faculty members. The various speakers discussed their topics and finalized the content, duration, handouts, role play and group activities for the participants. The certificates were printed as per the format given by the Nodal centre.

Faculties from preclinical, para clinical and clinical departments of the college were selected. Prior to the workshop, a day before, the MEU had called a meeting for all participants, wherein they were briefed about the coming 3 days workshop, schedule and necessary instructions were given to them.

The total no. of participants who attended the CISP workshop from12th-14th June 2019 were 30.All the participants were from the parent college. Their designations were as follows: a) Professor- 22, b) Associate Professor- 5 and c) Assistant Professor- 3. Faculties from pre-clinical & para-clinical 19 and clinical disciplines were 11 respectively. The list of participants is attached in the Annexure I.

The Program titled “Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP)” was conducted for a period of 3 days from 12th-14th June 2019, and the copy of programme is attached in Annexure II.

Day one (12th June 2019) of the workshop:

The first day (12th June 2019) of the workshop started with Registration and breakfast. The participants were divided into 5 groups. Respected Dean Dr. Surekha Patil inaugurated the workshop, welcomed MCI observer Dr. Sharmila Jalgaonkar and addressed the audience. The MEU Co-ordinator, Dr. Archana Bhate gave the workshop orientation to the participants.

Dr. Meena Satiya began with ”Ice breaking and introduction of participants and faculty”. This was followed by sessions on “Competency based medical education (CBME)”, which was taken by Dr. Archana Bhate and “IMG: Goals, roles &Competencies” was taken by Dr. Archana Bhate and Dr. Deepali Vidhate.There was lot of enthusiasm among the participants during the activity. Dr. Archana Bhate and Dr. Deepali Vidhate took a session on “Deriving objectives from competencies” and  “Linking competency objectives to Teaching Learning Methods (TLM)”.  Group activity was given and was well appreciated by all participants.

Following lunch, Dr. Deepali Vidhate took the session on ”Proposed changes in Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2019”. The session was very much appreciated by all participants. Tea was served and followed by sessions on “Electives” conducted by Dr Sharmila Patil, followed by ”Foundation Course” by Dr. Vaishaki Thakare  and “AETCOM module” by Dr. Meena SatiyaThe speakers shared their most cherishing teaching learning experience with the audience.  The day ended with feedback on the sessions conducted during that day. The partcipants filled the required feedback / evaluation forms.

 

Day two (13th June 2019) of the workshop:

On day two-Dr. Archana Bhate and Dr Sharmila Patil jointly conducted session on “Early clinical exposure (ECE)”, while Dr. Sharmila Patil & Dr Vaishali Thakre jointly spoke on”Integration”.The session on “Aligning & integrating competencies” was conducted by Dr Vaishali Thakare and Dr Deepali Vidhate. Following tea break the session was conducted on “Skill Training” by Dr Sharmila Patil & Dr Meena Satiya.The day ended with feedback on the sessions conducted during that day. The participants filled the required feedback / evaluation forms.

Day three (14th June 2019) of the workshop:

On day three,Dr Archana Bhate & Dr Vaishali Thakare conducted session on”Assessment in CBME”. This was followed by session on “Aligning assessment to competency objectives & TLM” which was taken byDr Archana Bhate & Dr Vaishali Thakare. Both the sessions generated a lot of curiosity and interest to learn more.Dr Sharmila Patil & Dr Meena Satiya spoke on “Learning Resource Materials”. The participants found the sessions very interesting. Dr Sharmila Patil & Dr Meena Satiya conducted session on” Curricular governance”. Dr Deepali Vidhateconducted session on” Road ahead”. The participants found the sessions quite interactive and informative. The participants were given various exercises, which was effectively done.

Newer topics in CBME curriculum, such as Foundation Course at the beginning of MBBS course, Electives and Early clinical exposure was dealt with in details by the faculty and generated tremendous response from the participants regarding its planning and implementation. The concept of integration and alignment of the subjects along with designing the time-table was also addressed.However, concerns were raised regarding the time frame for implementation, need for more faculty and need for support staff for effective implementations and documentation.

The participants then filled the required feedback and evaluation forms. Following open house, the programme ended with a Valedictory Function. Many participants and speakers spoke about their experiences and gave constructive feedback. The participants appreciated the workshop and assured that they would implement what they learned from the various sessions.

 

The sessions were assessed by the participants using evaluation forms from the MCI.  The point’s allotted by the participants showed a significant improvement in knowledge and importance after each session. The participants were extremely satisfied with the overall arrangements and conduct of the workshop.

The team work and spirit of the MEU in organising the workshop within a short timeframe was appreciated by all the participants.

The first 3-days workshop on “Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP)” was successfully conducted at Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Navi-Mumbai from 12th – 14th June 2019, as per the protocol suggested by MCI, and was well appreciated by the participants. The workshop involved lot of Group activities, Individual task, Role plays, small group discussions etc. The group activities were planned in such a manner that linking of the goals to competency based education, along with specific learning objectives, teaching learning methods and assessment, was achieved.The attendance was 100 % on all three days.
