The School of Nursing along with the School of Medicine of the D Y Patil University in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) conducted a two day state level conference on 15th and 16th of December 2016 on a much needed focus area in Mumbai. i.e. Disaster Management.
The objective of the training program was to create awareness and facilitate disaster preparedness.
Dr. Priyadarshini Patil Cholera, a Trustee, of D Y Patil Group graced the occasion. The program began with the Principal of D Y Patil School of Nursing, Dr. Mrs. Swati. V. Kambli unfolding the theme. The Chief Guest Dr. Ramling Mali the President of Maharashtra Nursing Council emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness. Dr. Shirish Patil, Dean of D Y Patil University appreciated the Yeomen’s’ Service rendered by the nursing community in the Hospital and the Society at large. The controller of Exam Mrs. Ashwini Mahadeshwar, Dean of School of Medicine Dr. Surekha Patil and the Dy Medical Superintendent Dr. Shyam More were present.
The two day long sessions were packed with lectures, interactions and demonstration on various aspects of disaster and its management including basics of disaster, Hospital Disaster Management plan and Evacuation drill. Types of fire and methods of extinguishing them were demonstrated live and the enthusiasm of the participants was witnessed till the last session of the conference. The other topics dealt were handling mass casualty, Triage and Emergency Medical care including Cardio Pulmonary and Cerebral Resuscitation.
The Speakers for the day were Mr. Rajendra Lokende, CRS, DMU and CCRS, Mr. Brahmadandi, DMU and CCRS, Mrs. Priya John, Associate Professor, D Y Patil School of Nursing, Nerul and Dr. ( Mrs.) Deepali Rajpal, Prof Emergency Medicine, D Y Patil School of Medicine. The Faculty made the sessions highly practical and relevant by engaging the participants in various ground aspects of disaster management which was an eye opener for the delegates.
We had 350 participants from various hospitals and colleges including D Y Patil Hospital and Research center, D Y Patil School of Nursing, Bombay hospital, ITM, Nair hospital, MGM College of Nursing, Vispute College of Nursing and also from other colleges like TISS, Law College and Allied health. The securities of our hospital were also trained in using fire extinguishers, transporting and rescuing casualties during emergencies.
The organizer of the conference i e, the first M.Sc nursing and PBBSc nursing students of D Y Patil College of Nursing and the coordinators Mrs.Priya John and Mrs. Aswathy Aby did an excellent job of co-coordinating and orchestrating the whole program which was well appreciated.
During the valedictory function Mr. Mahesh Narvekar, Chief Officer of Disaster management gave away the certificates to all the participants and also for the winners of the poster competition. Mrs. Mankumari Mistry, the Vice Principal of D Y Patil School of Nursing delivered the vote of thanks and the function concluded with Mrs. Pricey Jimmy , Faculty with D Y Patil who compeered the sessions signing off. The whole program was a memorable occasion for all who participated.
