Workshop on Client Counselling
On 23rd of July 2020, DY Patil Deemed to be University, School of Law under the guidance of Hon’ble Chancellor Dr Vijay Patil, had organized an informative workshop on the topic of Client Counselling. The workshop was conducted on the ZOOM platform, at 4 PM.
The workshop was addressed by Adv. Piyush Maheshwari, assistant professor at the School of Law. The objective of the workshop was to prepare the students for the challenges and hurdles that advocates usually face in the beginning of their career, one of them being professional and effective counselling of their clients. In order to achieve this objective, Adv. Piyush had started with a small brief about the fundamentals of client counselling, followed by points that an advocate must remember and try to fulfil during their brief meeting with the client. Beginning from the initial greetings, the road map of the interview, a patient hearing of the client’s case, making him/ her comfortable enough, providing a suitable and most appropriate advice and ending with the charging of fees, are the few important steps of an appropriate client counselling. In order to explain the points in a more efficient way, Ms Lavanya Panicker, member of the organizing committee for the National Client Counselling Competition, helped Adv. Piyush to enact a mock client counselling. While the mock counselling session Adv. Piyush would keep on guiding the attendees present on how to proceed towards the next phase of the counselling.
After the mock client counselling session, Ms Vaishali Sharma, member of the organizing committee of the National Client Counselling Competition, shared the details of the competitions through the medium of a ppt. She de-briefed the session about the conductance of the competition, rules and regulations, marking scheme and the bare acts to be referred during the session.
At the end of the ppt, Lavanya and Vaishali then enacted a full-fledged counselling session. Vaishali was the counsel and Lavanya was the client who had approached Vaishali with her problem. The session was conducted as per the points and guidelines provided by Adv. Piyush in the beginning. To sum up the workshop, a warm vote of thanks was then delivered by Adv. Piyush Maheshwari by congratulating and wishing good luck to all the participants of client counselling competition.
