BA in English Language

The BA in English encourages students to critically engage with English literatures from various global contexts including translations and postcolonial literatures and canonical English and world literature. Learning a selection of foreign, classical, and vernacular languages along with a grounding in translation and linguistics, this course radically redraws the contours of a traditional undergraduate program in literatures.

Coupled with the minors and electives, philosophy to sociology, the English program makes the study of literature holistic and multidimensional. Students develop tangible skills in translation and interpretation, professional and public writing, editing, and advertising.

Apart from a vibrant interdisciplinary curriculum, the students will organize film and literary festivals, help function film clubs, edit magazines, and produce podcasts.

They will intern with media houses, corporates, and cultural bodies, gaining vital exposure to life outside academia.

• Candidates must have qualified 10+2 or equivalent from any stream from recognized board.
• Candidates having an aggregate of 50% or more at the qualifying exam level are  eligible for the BA in English Language program.

• A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English program typically aims to equip students with a diverse skill set that can be applied across various fields.
• Graduates should demonstrate proficiency in written and verbal communication. They should be adept at crafting well-structured essays, reports, and critical analyses.
• Ability to analyse and interpret literary texts from different genres, time periods, and cultural backgrounds. Understanding themes, styles, and contexts within literature.
• Developing critical thinking skills to assess and critique texts, ideas, and arguments. This involves the ability to think analytically and evaluate information critically.
• Conducting in-depth research using various sources such as books, scholarly articles, digital archives, and databases. Proficiency in conducting literary research and forming well-supported arguments.

Many English graduates find careers as writers or editors for newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, or online platforms. This includes roles such as content creators, copywriters, and technical writers.

• Teaching is a common path for English majors. With additional certifications, you can become a high school English teacher, or pursue higher education and become a college professor.

• The skills developed in critical analysis, research, and persuasive writing can be beneficial in legal professions.

• Content developers research, prepare, write, and edit online content for marketing and front-end web development.
• Proofreaders – catch spelling mistakes, grammar, and punctuation errors.
